As an organist, conductor and pianist
Dr Matt Geer is an experienced organist, conductor, and church musician with a background in cathedral, parish, liturgical, choral, and festival contexts. As a recital-award-winning organist, he has studied in lessons and masterclasses with leading organists including Dame Gillian Weir, Robert Quinney, Gordon Stewart, James Lloyd Thomas, and Simon Williams.
He has performed at many of the UK’s major cathedrals, abbeys, collegiate chapels, and churches, including Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Southwark Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Liverpool Cathedral, Chichester Cathedral, Belfast Cathedral, and major Oxford and Cambridge chapels, as well as venues in France and Belgium. His work as an organist is informed by a strong interest in sacred music, liturgy, improvisation, choral accompaniment, and the promotion of organ music by emerging composers.
Matt is currently Director of Music at the historic Old Town Parish in Hastings, East Sussex, where he directs both the RSCM Junior Choristers and an SATB adult liturgical choir. In this role, he leads regular choral worship, trains young singers through the RSCM Voice for Life scheme, develops liturgical repertoire, and plays the church’s three-manual Father Willis organ, built in 1877. He was previously Director of Music at St Patrick’s Church, Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, where he directed the parish’s RSCM-affiliated SATB choir. From 2015 to 2021, he served as Director of Music at St Agnes Church, Kennington Park, where he led the St Agnes Liturgical Choir and directed the Kennington Park Recital Series, presenting thirteen concerts each year.
Alongside his church music work, Matt has directed and worked with a range of choirs and ensembles, including Queen’s Consort, the Mossgrove Singers, Guildhall Schola Cantorum, London Conservatoire Singers, and St Agnes Liturgical Choir. From 2020 to 2021, he also worked as pianist for the Emily Davies Dance Academy, accompanying ballet workshops, rehearsals, and examinations. Matt’s wider arts and music administration experience includes serving as Executive Producer of the Southern Cathedrals Festival, Development Officer for the English Music Festival, and working with the Ulster Orchestra in both fundraising and Learning and Community Engagement. He is a Fellow of the Society of Crematorium Organists, and a member of the Royal College of Organists, the Musicians’ Union, and the Incorporated Society of Musicians.
